We were recently selected by the U.S. Air Force and the Department of Defense’s (DoD) Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office (CDAO) as one of the top companies preapproved to pursue geothermal projects for the U.S. Air Force, Navy and Army bases, globally.

This selection is a response to a geothermal campaign from the DoD to explore developing utility-scale geothermal power plants in the U.S. and abroad, without having to engage in any further competition. 尤物视频 received its ‘awardable’ status through the CDAO solicitation process known as the Tradewinds Solutions Marketplace, which is designed to accelerate the procurement and adoption of mission critical technologies.

Why it matters

Renewable energy resources like wind and solar are intermittent, whereas geothermal can provide continuous, resilient, and carbon-free electricity regardless of weather conditions. Late last year, the DoD and the U.S. Air Force began seeking novel approaches to generate electricity at its installations using geothermal energy.

What's the challenge?

Despite its advantages, there are numerous technological and geological barriers to geothermal energy that have hindered the U.S. government’s ability to construct a utility-scale geothermal facility to directly supply electricity to its installations. While newer geothermal technologies hold the promise of producing power without having to rely on naturally occurring hydrothermal reservoirs, such technologies do not currently exist at utility-scale.

The DoD is seeking to conduct a business process prototype to determine whether these technologies are technically and economically feasible at installations in the U.S. and around the world.

In the U.S. specifically, the GeothermEx team, in coordination with project technical partners, has supported a on numerous military bases for the DoD. This assessment involved detailed reviews, expert interviews and field investigations at several installations. The findings identified significant utility-grade geothermal potential at Naval Air Facility El Centro in Southern California and highlighted at least four other installations for further investigation, while also recognizing the potential for direct-use geothermal at multiple bases in the Western U.S.
