Downhole hydraulic and electric wet-mate connector

Disconnect the upper and lower parts of an intelligent completion with the ability to seamlessly reestablish hydraulic and electric connectivity

Applications

  • Multitrip installations for intelligent completions in complex wells
  • Hydraulic and electric intelligent lower completions requiring workover flexibility
  • Wells with anticipated upper completion workovers, such as electric submersible pump (ESP) changeovers

Benefits

  • Seamless workover operations: Facilitates disconnecting upper and lower completions to reduce workover cost and complexity
  • Long-term reliability: Maintains hydraulic and electric connectivity between upper and lower completions over the life of the well
  • Simplified installation: Requires no downhole rotational alignment, which is ideal for multitrip installations in deviated and horizontal wells and reduces overall rig time

Features

  • Contactless inductive coupler
    • transmits electric power and high-rate bidirectional telemetry between upper and lower completions
    • remains immune to electromagnetic noise from ESPs
    • has a fully metallic, encapsulated design that prevents liquid or gas ingress and ensures long-term reliability
  • Protective sleeves safeguard hydraulic wet-mate ports from debris and fluids during workovers
  • Hydraulic energy is reliably transmitted through direct or electrohydraulic control systems
  • Concentric connection design eliminates the need for rotational alignment during stinger insertion into the receptacle
  • High-grade, corrosion-resistant metals provide durability for continuous operation in HPHT environments at depths >10,000 ft [>3,048 m] and pressures up to 15,000 psi [103 MPa]

How it improves performance

Our downhole hydraulic and electric wet-mate (HEWM) connector addresses the challenges of intelligent completions by enabling upper completion workovers without the need to retrieve the lower completion. This feature ensures the integrity of critical downhole hardware while maintaining uninterrupted hydraulic and electric functionality. The HEWM connector's robust, contactless inductive coupler addresses the challenges associated with traditional physical connections.

How it works

The HEWM connector can be run in single- or two-trip configuration. It consists of two main subassemblies:

  • The receptacle is installed with the lower completion, forming its hydraulic and electric interface.
  • The stinger is attached to the upper completion and mates with the receptacle to establish hydraulic and electric connectivity.

During a workover, the stinger is easily retrieved without disrupting the lower completion. The inductive coupler ensures continuous telemetry and power delivery, while the protective sleeves prevent contamination of hydraulic ports.

What it replaces

Legacy completion systems requiring complex workover techniques that often result in a sidetrack or necessitate complete intelligent hardware retrieval.
